The North Fork of the Shoshone River runs through the Shoshone National Forest (the first designated National Forest in the world). Our trip begins near the East Gate of Yellowstone National Park and provides all-day opportunities to view Wyoming’s wildlife.
This exceptional river experience is the best value river trip in the Cody Wyo area and unlike any other. Grizzly bears, moose, bighorn sheep, buffalo, birds of prey, in addition to the stunning beauty of this alpine environment makes this a can’t miss outdoor adventure. Wyoming River Trips was the first river outfitter to run commercial river trips here and is the ONLY river outfitter permitted through the Shoshone National Forest on this section of river.
Whitewater means wet! We suggest dressing in layers.
For May – early June: non-cotton underwear or bathing suit (this helps keep your warm while cotton will keep you cool through evapotranspiration), non-cotton shorts or pants, and non-cotton t-shirt and then long sleeve shirt. If guests need fewer layers, that’s easy! Just take off your long pants or long shirt. If guests need more layers, we provide splash tops and bottoms. The layers you have on already will help trap your body heat.
Mid June – Aug: some type of underwear or bathing suit, t- shirt and shorts, if you are a person who gets cold feel free to bring a long sleeve as well. Remember that cotton will cool you down. On a day where you are rafting at 1:30pm and it is supposed to be 98 degrees, cotton will help you stay cool. If you are rafting at 9am and the forecast calls for light clouds and 65, less cotton will keep you warmer until the sun makes it’s appearance later that morning.
All guests should Wear shoes that can get wet and will stay on your feet. We recommend sneakers or sandals that strap on. Flip flops are not the best. If you lose one in a rapid, there is no guarantee we will find it and it will make it more difficult to find a solid footing in the slippery boat. We rent wetsuit booties for those who don’t have appropriate footwear. Please be advised, these do not offer very much ankle support and the footbed is fairly thing. If you have sensitive feet, we recommend something that you own with thicker sole
A detailed list of what to wear and what to bring will arrive in your confirmation email along with next steps for how to sign your waiver and tell us about dietary restrictions.
Bring:
- Reusable water bottles
- Sunscreen
- Change of clothes
- Dress in layers — opt for quick-drying clothing, synthetic insulating layers
- Secure footwear that can get wet

The North Fork of the Shoshone – May – early July
Your full day rafting adventure begins just five miles east of Yellowstone National Park in the Shoshone National Forest. This stretch of river will transport you back in time where it is not hard to imagine the Cody Country of 100 years ago. Each bend in the river brings new breathtaking views and takes you deeper into the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. You may see bighorn sheep on cliffs, moose grazing along the river’s edge, a grizzly forging a hillside above the river, or eagles and osprey soaring in the Wyoming sky. You will feel the thrill of anticipation as you round the bends in the river above Morman Creek Rapid, Gunbarrel and others—descending down the shoots of churning whitewater. This natural flow river is truly unique and it’s fluctuating flows mean no two experiences are the same. Because this river is fed from melting snowpack, it has a shorter season than most. Don’t miss it! A great option for wedding parties, corporate events, and special occasions. Give us a call to plan something special!
Wyoming River Trips is the only commercial rafting operation permitted on this section of the North Fork River through the Shoshone National Forest.

I’ve lived in the area for nearly 30 years and decided to take a float with this company. Well, I’ve been missing out all of these years. The staff (Rick, Joe & Jess) was amazing, hardworking and professional! Can’t wait to go again. HOLY whitewater!!!!
